Unable to impose ’solutions’ that would be of no help whatsoever, excepting for their own erroneous fantasies of increased tax revenue, Rep. Nancy Pelosi shut down the US House of Representatives rather than even consider work on energy legislation.
The Republicans, to their credit, temporarily seized the opportunity, and refused to leave until Capitol Security was called later in the day to clear the chambers.
In this post about the incident, Mark Hemingway’s correspondent points out that the President could request the House come back from recess to consider the matter further. The Republicans in Congress have asked him to do so.
He should do so immediately, and as publicly as possible. After he makes the request, every available Republican lawmaker, from both houses, should make every effort to return to DC, and be as visible and as outspoken as possible about their desire to do what needs to be done for the good of the American people. Every Republican candidate facing a Democratic opponent this November should start hammering this issue - hard - being sure to highlight their opponents’ obstructionism and intransigence against doing something to directly help their constituents.
The Democrats, particularly the leadership of Pelosi, Reid, Durbin, and Hoyer have oh, so conveniently managed to utterly paint themselves into a corner on the wrong side of a HUGE issue. There needs to be as much energy and activity devoted to publicizing this very fundamental, basic fact as possible, so there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever in anyone’s minds who wants American household budgets bled dry by runaway energy costs - those reliable lapdogs of the extreme environmentalist lobby, the Democratic Party.
This is much larger, and much less ambiguous than any other issue before the American public.
If the Republicans can’t frame this debate, and use it to rout the party that apparently wants Americans to be poor, cold, and in the dark, then perhaps they don’t deserve their jobs, either.

I’ve have told people for years that the Democratic Party was the closest thing to communism, but I was told I was crazy. Now I feel I’ve been vindicated by Pelosi’s actions. Her actions were something you would expect from China or Russia or North Korea. Maybe the Republicans are starting to grow a little backbone. Let’s see what happens next week. They can’t ignore the fact that these rising gas prices are running up the cost of food and everything else. Also this is an excellent reason for term limits.
